Screenings
- The Pap test detects abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancerous. You should have cervical screenings regularly, at least once every three years. The best option is to get a complex cervical screening, which includes a pelvic exam, the Pap test and the HPV test.
- Getting an annual breast exam is highly recommended for those over the age of 40. A mammogram is the best possible method of detecting cancer early. It can be combined with an ultrasound exam if necessary.
- There is a growing need for screenings for sexually transmitted disease, mainly for younger people.
Gynecological issues
Particular attention should be paid to gynecological issues: no matter how embarrassing the symptom, we urge you to contact us without delay.
Problems related to menstruation should definitely not be ignored, it's important to figure out the cause of an irregular menstrual cycle or painful periods. Often, a lifestyle change consultation or just treating the symptom is enough to reassure the patient that what they're experiencing is totally normal, but it may also shed light on various illnesses.
Recurrent urinary tract infections, vaginitis and lower abdominal pains shouldn't be taken lightly either. A consultation with your gynecologist will help clear up what the underlying cause is and also open up possibilities for (even preventive or long-term) treatment.
Urinary incontinence, the involuntary leakage of urine, is a source of anxiety for many women. It can happen at any age, but it occurs more often as people get older. One of the causes is the urethral tissue becoming weaker, but it can be related to childbirth as well. There is more than one type of incontinence, hence more than one way to treat it. Diagnosing and treating the condition may require our OB-GYNs and urologists to work together.
The HPV vaccine
In the majority of cervical cancer cases, HPV is the culprit. HPV, the Human Papillomavirus, has over 200 known variants. The HPV vaccine protects against the variants that cause most HPV cancers. As part of a vaccination drive in Hungarian schools, 7th grade girls can get the HPV vaccine for free, but it's not mandatory. The vaccine is most effective before the patient becomes sexually active, but getting the shot offers the best protection even after sex, and it's also recommended for boys and men.
Before becoming sexually active
It's definitely worth getting a consultation on birth control even before your daughter becomes sexually active. In this case, the gynecologist will not perform a full pelvic exam, maybe just a pelvic ultrasound, and help you choose a birth control method that's safe and appropriate. Family planning and prenatal care
Obstetric consultations are an important part of family planning. In most cases, the obstetrician's role is to perform the requisite screenings, monitor and discuss lifestyle changes, and to ensure a relaxed pregnancy for the mom-to-be. Smaller, and sometimes larger, issues do come to light on occasion. These are, for the most part, easily treated, but can also cause difficulties for expectant mothers.
