Teeth whitening (more specifically, properly performed teeth whitening) is safe and effective - we are trying to explain the process of in-office teeth whitening in this post.
The tooth color of people with lighter skin tones is genetically more often whiter than that of their darker skin-toned counterparts. Whitening is achieved by exchanging the fluids in the outer layer of enamel to remove coloring substances. The results can be long-lasting, but not permanent, as we constantly consume foods and drinks containing coloring agents. In addition, other bad habits (such as smoking) turn the color of teeth yellow. It is important to know that adverse side effects are not expected when using tooth whitening gels as intended, and any tooth sensitivity that may occur will disappear very quickly by using toothpaste and gels with high fluoride content.
The process of teeth whitening in the dental practice consists of the following steps:
Preparation:
- First of all, it is always necessary to assess the dental condition: if caries, deep cervical abrasion, or inflammation can be seen the whitening process should not be started. In such cases, the problematic teeth should be treated first and then the desired whitening can be proceeded.
- Before whitening, our patients should also undergo a dental hygiene cleaning: in case of tartar, plaque, inflamed gums, or periodontal disease the procedure cannot be carried out. The aim is to remove all obstacles and start the cleaning as soon as the teeth are healthy.
Teeth whitening procedure:
- The duration of the procedure is 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the recommendation of the dentist and the procedure used.
- The initial shade is determined and photographic documentation is taken.
- A protective layer is used on the gum to protect the mucosa. Then the whitening gel is applied to the teeth, left on, or replaced according to the instructions.
- The new tooth color is registered and the result is evaluated on a tooth color scale after the treatment.
- To complete the process, a desensitizing gel is applied to the teeth.
It can be seen that the whitening process is painless and doesn't take a long time. However, we are not done yet, as there are a few things to keep in mind for the next 5-6 days following the treatment:
- only food and drinks free of coloring agents are recommended – consuming coffee, tea, coke, tomato and pepper dishes, colored spices, and red wine should be avoided
- fruits with a high acid content, drinking juices, and extremely cold or hot foods and drinks should not be consumed
- smoking is prohibited during this period (it can also be a good motivation to quit)
- only white toothpaste and colorless mouthwash can be used during these few days.
