This speciality of dentistry is the saving of existing teeth. In practice, it includes procedures ranging from the treatment of minor caries to root canal treatment.
Tooth pain is caused by the stimulation of nerve endings in the tooth socket and root canal. It can be said that toothache is one of the most intolerable pains. It can range from a mild aching sensation to an almost unbearable, excruciating pain that extends over the whole face.
In the case of tooth decay, the stimuli can cause pain as they reach the gum, and as the decay progresses, the gum becomes diseased and the inflammation can spread to the periosteum.
A tooth that appears intact may also be sensitive to strong heat or chemical stimuli. Caries on the surface between the teeth may be the cause, or the surface of the cervicals may be exposed due to receding gums. In these cases, pain can be eliminated by proper restoration of the tooth surfaces.
In the case of root canal treatment, the pulp is removed under local anaesthetic. The unrooted tooth is later strengthened with a special screw, which makes the root canal tooth almost full in terms of load-bearing capacity.
