Avoiding surprises - health tips for a trip

There are so many memorable moments to experience outdoors, and with the right preparations, you can ensure that you don't get any unpleasant surprises. What to look out for?

Avoiding surprises - health tips for a trip

There is no better way to relax than a family or camping trip. Away from the noise of the city, leaving the mobile phones and laptops behind, getting away from the stress of everyday life. However, there are a few things you need to prepare to make it an actual holiday and a few things you need to be aware of.

Safety first

Whether you're exploring by bike, boat, or on foot, the key is to make sure you're safe. A helmet for cycling, special shoes for hiking, and a life jacket for boating are the essential items of equipment you should never leave home without.

Those damn bugs

Wear a hat, long-sleeved top and trousers in the woods. It's worth vaccinating the whole family against ticks - tick vaccinations are available for the entire family at RMC. If you do get bitten by a tick, remove it from the skin immediately. For other insect bites, get rid of the sting as soon as possible (if you don't have tweezers handy, a plain bank card can be a quick fix). If the area around the sting swells, start icing.

Careful with food

If you are preparing food to take home, cook it well and take a cool bag with you. If you're going on a multi-day hike or camping trip, store your food at least 30 meters from the campsite and cook it there, too, so if a wild animal visits you looking for food, it's only your food that will be harmed.

Know the poisonous plants

Before setting off, be sure to check out the poisonous plants in the area. Contact with poison ivy or oak can cause rashes, blistering, or other allergic reactions. The plant oil that causes the response spreads quickly, so wash the affected area with soap and water immediately and then ice it if possible.

First aid box

Before your trip, pack a first-aid kit containing a band-aid, medical tape, gauze, tweezers, a cooling bag, antiseptic, pain and inflammation cream or spray, allergy medicine, and prescription medication.

One last tip: save the pediatrician's phone number: (+36-1) 392 0505.

RMC's Pediatric Center is available all summer, in person or online. If you need a quick consultation during your vacation, you can book an appointment for an RMC Vacation Online Consultation within seconds.
