Breast surgery includes breast corrections for cosmetic reasons, the removal of various benign tumors (fibroadenomas), and breast reconstruction after the removal of malignant tumors in the breasts. Breast augmentation, reduction and/or lifting may be carried out as a result of breast underdevelopment and overdevelopment or changes to the shape or form of the breasts caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding or aging. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Hungary. If a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, surgery forms one aspect of a multidisciplinary approach to treating the disease. In recent decades, there have been incredible strides made in breast cancer surgery.
Today, there are oncoplastic surgical techniques available that apply a combination of oncological and plastic surgical principles to retain the original breast with the radical removal of the tumor. This approach can provide patients with a very high-quality cosmetic outcome and quality of life. If the breast is completely removed, breast reconstruction can also be carried out with the use of various types of tissue expanders, implants, and/or tissue from the patient. Most often, following the complete removal of a breast, the breasts are reconstructed using a deferred-immediate technique. A tissue expander is inserted that can then be replaced by a fixed-volume implant to help form the desired shape of the breast after a suitable post-treatment period. Breast cancer surgery also encompasses reconstruction of the nipple following tumor surgery; asymmetry corrective surgery on the side of the breasts; the correction of misshapen breasts, using fat cells from the patient.
