Beach food? Diet tips for summer

We want to eat and drink well during our well-deserved summer holidays.

Beach food? Diet tips for summer

Whether relaxing on the beach or the terrace at home, we can make healthy choices with some mindfulness. This can include a “lángos” on the shores of Lake Balaton, a barbecue at home, or sampling local specialties on holiday abroad. Here are some travel tips.

Pay attention to portion sizes

Share as a family or in company, e.g., split a pancake or pizza. Have 1-2 scoops of good-quality ice cream instead of huge cups. You can taste everything without overeating if you cut smaller portions when grilling.

Avoid fatty, heavy foods in the heat

For example, pasta fried in oil is challenging to digest, and its toppings are either spicy (garlic) or a source of additional fat (sour cream, cheese). It is not recommended for people with stomach, bile, or intestinal problems.

Choose fish dishes, too

On holiday abroad, try local fish and seafood. Fatty fish such as trout, salmon, and mackerel contribute to our health with omega-3 fatty acids. A hake from a lake or riverbank is an excellent source of protein. Nowadays, it is also possible to find restaurants and buffets that do not fry them in oil.

Choose salads or pickles to accompany your meal

A good Greek salad, tzatziki, or pickled cucumbers, the summer hit, also count towards your daily vegetable intake. The latter also adds beneficial germs to our gut flora.

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to drink enough liquid at this time of year. Drink 8 glasses of fluid a day, 5 of which should be pure water. In hot weather, it can be 2-3 glasses more. Alcohol does not count as a fluid (nor does beer) because its effect increases water loss (dehydration). Avoid drinking alcohol in the heat.

Pay particular attention to food hygiene

Food can spoil more quickly in hot weather. Choose freshly prepared food at the beach and avoid perishables (for example, mayonnaise). Do not refreeze products that have already been defrosted. Refrigerate ready meals quickly. Wash vegetables and fruit thoroughly.

+1 tip for ice cream fans

It's worth choosing better-quality confectionery instead of processed foods. Fruit ice creams have a very low fruit content. It's worth making ice cream at home to achieve a higher fruit or dairy content and lower sugar content. This can be a great activity with children on holiday to get acquainted with fruits.

It is also important to strictly avoid foods that cause complaints for people with food allergies, intolerances, or sensitivities when on holiday. Always read food labels. You can use a translation program or ask the staff if you speak a foreign language. The 14 main food allergen types in the European Union must be indicated or information given everywhere, so take advantage of this opportunity. It is worth thinking about which are the safe staple foods to take with you or buy locally. It is worth asking your accommodation or restaurant for information in advance. In such cases, planning and avoiding unnecessary risks can help you relax.
