Who is the sonographer, and what do they do?

In our clinic, mothers do not see audited ultrasound specialists only; in some cases, they are also examined by sonographers. In this blog post, we would like to introduce these two professions and explain the differences between them.

Who is the sonographer, and what do they do?

So, who is a sonographer?

Sonographers specialize in performing ultrasound scans, creating and evaluating images with the same accuracy as doctors. Their job is to prepare the medical decision without the actual examination being carried out by a doctor. In cases where the sonographer finds a discrepancy, the scan is followed by an ultrasound performed by a doctor, and the final diagnosis is made on this basis.

At our institute, our doctors check the complete image documentation taken by the sonographers even if the sonographer has found no abnormality.

Does this mean I don't have to worry if it is not (only) the doctor who does the examination?

At our institute, the scan contains the same predefined and recorded planes if a sonographer is performing the work. Hence, the quality and value of the scan are equivalent regardless of who held the ultrasound head.

Will I be seeing the doctor anyway?

Of course, each scan performed by a sonographer is checked and validated by the audited ultrasound specialist in charge of the practice. If the patient has any questions, they can discuss them with our specialist after the examination. The quality and validity of the examination are the responsibility of the ultrasound specialist in our institute; this is our basic quality assurance principle.
